The short answer

Three days is enough to visit Murchison Falls, but it is not the best version of the park. Four days is the better first-time shape.

A 3-day trip usually means one long road day in, one full safari day, and one long road day out. That can work if your leave is fixed, your group travels lightly, and you are realistic about what gets missed.

What a 3-day trip can cover

The best 3-day version looks like this:

Day 1: Kampala or Entebbe to Murchison, possibly via Ziwa rhino tracking if you leave early. Arrive late afternoon or evening.

Day 2: Sunrise game drive, lunch, then Nile boat cruise to the bottom of the falls. If timing allows, add the Top of the Falls viewpoint.

Day 3: Early exit and return to Kampala or Entebbe. Do not gamble with a tight international flight unless the timing is very late.

That is a valid trip. It gives you the Nile, a game drive, and the waterfall story. It does not give you much margin.

What gets squeezed

The first thing you lose is pace. You may miss a second game drive, delta cruise, proper lodge time, or a cleaner Ziwa stop. You also give yourself less flexibility if roadworks, rain, ferry timing, or a late start changes the day.

Murchison is large. UWA lists the park at 3,840 km2, and the Uganda Tourism Board notes the road from Kampala to the southern entrance is about 4 to 5 hours before you add internal park movement. That is why a short Murchison trip can feel longer than it looks on a map.

Who should choose three days?

Choose three days if:

  • You are already in Kampala.
  • You have done gorillas and only have one safari window left.
  • You are comfortable with early starts.
  • Your lodge location supports the schedule.
  • You do not need Budongo chimp tracking.

Choose four days if:

  • It is your first safari.
  • You are travelling with children or older guests.
  • You want Ziwa, falls, boat, and game drives without rushing.
  • You want a better chance of strong wildlife sightings.
