Why Murchison

Murchison Falls is Uganda’s largest national park (≈ 3,840 km²) and the only one cut by the Nile. The river squeezes through a 7-metre gap and falls 43 metres into the Devil’s Cauldron — a roar you feel in your chest before you see it. Above and below the falls: classic African game-drive country (lions, elephants, giraffes, Uganda kob, the elusive shoebill on the delta), boat cruises with crocodile-and-hippo density on a par with anywhere on the continent, and a low-key, working park feel that hasn’t been over-curated.

Four days lets you do all three sections — top of the falls, the delta game drive, the river cruise — without rushing.

Day-by-day

Day 1 — Kampala → Murchison (drive)

  • 07:00: Departure from Kampala or Entebbe in a private 4×4.
  • En route: A Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary stop (a walking rhino tracking — Uganda’s only wild rhinos, an hour with them on foot).

  • Evening: Sundowner. Park briefing.

Stay: Baker’s Lodge (luxury) / Pakuba Safari Lodge (premium) / Murchison River Lodge (comfortable).

Day 2 — Top of the Falls + River Cruise

  • Morning: Hike to the top of the falls. Spray, rainbows, the sheer geological violence.
  • Lunch: At the lodge.

  • Evening: Dinner at the lodge.

Day 3 — Northern Bank Game Drive + Delta Cruise

  • Early: Sunrise game drive on the northern bank. Lions, Rothschild’s giraffes, elephants, Uganda kob, hartebeest, oribi.
  • Lunch: Back at the lodge.
  • Afternoon: Delta cruise to the spot where the Nile pours into Lake Albert — your best chance in Murchison for the shoebill.
  • Evening: Last sundowner.

Day 4 — Murchison → Kampala (drive)

  • Drive: 5–6 hours back to Kampala. Lunch stop en route.

Murchison pairs beautifully with gorilla trekking — fly back from Pakuba via Entebbe and on to Kihihi for Bwindi. We build this regularly as a 7-day Uganda Highlights. See Uganda 10-Day Classic Safari → for the long version.

FAQ

Is the drive from Kampala to Murchison really 5–6 hours? Yes. The road via Masindi is good; the Ziwa Rhino stop breaks it up nicely. The alternative is to fly Entebbe ↔ Pakuba (≈ 1 hour each way) for an extra USD 600/person — worth it for short trips and older travellers.

Can I see the Big Five? You’ll see lion, elephant and buffalo. Leopards exist but are rare. Rhinos at Ziwa on the way (not in Murchison itself). No wild rhinos roaming the park.

Is it kid-friendly? Yes from age 6. Game drives and boats are easy; the falls hike is short.

Will I see a shoebill? The delta cruise is one of the better chances in Uganda outside Mabamba. Sightings are not guaranteed but not unusual.
