Start slower than you think

The best first day in Uganda is usually not a big safari day. It is a reset day.

After a long flight from London, New York, Dubai, Doha, Amsterdam, or Addis, your body is still catching up. Entebbe gives you a soft landing: airport nearby, Lake Victoria close, good hotels, easy food, and enough to do without forcing the trip open too fast.

If you want the bigger route shapes, see our Uganda safari experiences. This post is about protecting day one so the rest of the trip feels better.

What to do after landing

Keep it simple:

  • Meet your driver-guide.
  • Check your visa stamp and luggage.
  • Register a local SIM if you need one.
  • Change a small amount of cash.
  • Drive to your Entebbe hotel.
  • Shower, eat, and sleep.

If you arrive in the morning and feel good, add one gentle activity: Botanical Gardens, a short Lake Victoria sunset, or a quiet lunch. Do not add a long road transfer unless your itinerary has no other option.

Why we avoid immediate long drives

Uganda road travel asks for attention. Even when the road is good, the day is different from a motorway transfer in Europe or the Gulf. There are towns, speed humps, trucks, boda bodas, rain, police checks, animals near rural roads, and delays that do not show neatly on a map.

Starting a long drive while jet-lagged turns a beautiful country into a blur. Worse, it pushes your driver-guide into late-day timing. We avoid that.

A good first-day template

Morning arrival: hotel check-in if available, late breakfast, SIM/cash, easy Entebbe activity, early dinner.

Afternoon arrival: meet-and-greet, hotel transfer, dinner, sleep.

Late-night arrival: direct hotel transfer, no briefing beyond essentials, proper trip briefing next morning.

For families, older guests, or diaspora travellers arriving with gifts and extra bags, this first day matters even more. It gives everyone time to settle without feeling managed.

What to prepare before you fly

Have these ready:

  • Printed or saved visa approval.
  • Passport with enough validity.
  • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate if required by current entry rules.
  • Travel insurance details.
  • Hotel name for immigration.
  • Driver contact.
  • Small USD notes in clean condition.
  • Any medication in hand luggage.

The goal is not luxury. The goal is a clean start.

The small upgrade that helps

If your flight lands late, book the better airport-side hotel for the first night, then save money later. A smooth shower, quiet room, and short transfer after immigration can do more for the trip than one extra activity squeezed into day one.
