The honest answer

Uganda is usually harder underfoot. Rwanda is usually smoother logistically. But either country can give you an easy trek or a hard trek on the day.

Gorillas move. Weather changes. Trackers start with the family’s last known position, then the forest decides the rest.

If you want to plan the Uganda side properly, see our Uganda gorilla trekking trips and tell us about fitness before we check permits.

Why Uganda can feel harder

Bwindi is dense, steep, and uneven in places. Nkuringo can be physically demanding. Rushaga can vary widely. Buhoma is often smoother, but not guaranteed. Ruhija is cooler and higher.

The word "impenetrable" is not branding. The forest has vines, mud, nettles, roots, slopes, and sections where the trail is made as you go.

That does not mean you need to be an athlete. It means you need honest pacing, proper boots, and a sector choice that fits your body.

Why Rwanda can feel easier

Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is easier to reach from Kigali than Bwindi is from Entebbe. The travel day is shorter, the logistics are polished, and many treks feel more open underfoot.

That is why Rwanda works so well for short luxury trips. Less time in transit. More time at the lodge. Less uncertainty before the trek.

Still, Rwanda is not a theme park. Trails can be muddy and steep. Altitude can bite. Rain can change the whole morning.

Fitness questions to answer before booking

Tell your operator:

  • Can you walk uphill for two to four hours slowly?
  • Do you have knee or back issues?
  • Do you use an inhaler?
  • Are you nervous on mud or steep ground?
  • Do you need porter support?
  • Are you travelling with someone much slower or faster than you?

In Uganda, this helps us choose sector, lodge, transfer route, and porter plan.

The best planning rule

Do not ask, "Which country is easier?"

Ask, "Which route gives my group the best chance of enjoying the day?"

For some guests, that is Rwanda. For others, it is Buhoma. For fit travellers who want a deeper forest feel, it may be Nkuringo or Rushaga.

Porter note

Take a porter even if you are fit. It supports the local community and gives you practical help when the trail gets muddy. The porter can carry your daypack, steady you on slippery sections, and make the day feel calmer.
