The short answer

A Uganda gorilla trekking permit in 2026 costs USD 800 for a foreign non-resident in standard season. Foreign residents pay USD 700. East African citizens pay UGX 300,000.

There is also a low-season discount in April, May, and November. For those months, UWA’s 2026 notice introduced a discounted rate of USD 600 for foreign non-residents and USD 500 for foreign residents.

That is only the permit. It does not include your lodge, vehicle, driver-guide, flights, meals, porter, tips, visa, or insurance.

Why the permit matters so much

The permit is the one part of a gorilla trip you cannot casually swap later. It fixes the date, the park, and the sector. Once the permit is paid and issued, your lodge and route need to fit around it.

That is why cheap "gorilla safari" quotes can mislead people. A trip may look affordable because the operator has not included the permit, or because they assume a road route that costs two long transfer days. The right way to read any quote is simple: first find the permit line, then check what else is actually included.

Standard trek vs habituation

Most travellers book the standard gorilla trek. It gives you up to one hour with a habituated gorilla family after the ranger team finds them. The trek itself can be short or long. The one-hour viewing rule is the same.

The habituation experience is different. It is longer, more expensive, and only suits travellers who know they want deeper time in the forest. UWA’s 2026-2027 tariff change notice lists gorilla habituation at USD 1,800 for foreign non-residents from 1 January 2027, with other residency tiers listed separately. If you are planning across tariff periods, ask for the exact date-specific fee.

The booking rule people miss

The old seven-day permit reservation window was suspended from 1 March 2026. That matters. Operators used to reserve permits briefly while a traveller arranged payment. UWA’s 2026 notice says the system now secures permits only after full payment.

In plain English: if you want a permit, be ready to pay for it. A serious operator should not tell you a permit is secure unless it has been paid for and confirmed through the right channel.
