Uganda Budget 5-Day Camping Safari

This trip is for travellers who want a real safari without lodge-level prices, and who do not mind a tent, a shared vehicle and a simpler pace. It runs in a small group, typically 4 to 8 travellers, sharing a safari vehicle and campsite costs, which is what keeps this one affordable. It is not for anyone who wants a private vehicle or ensuite rooms every night, ask us about our lodge-based options instead if that matters to you.

Day-by-day

Day 1: Kampala to Jinja. Morning departure from Kampala, a short drive of around 2 hours to Jinja on the Nile. Afternoon free, with optional white water rafting or a Nile cruise available locally at your own cost. Overnight at a riverside campsite.

Day 2: Jinja to Murchison Falls. A long driving day, around 6 to 7 hours, heading north west to Murchison Falls National Park. Roads are mostly tarmac with a rougher final stretch into the park. Arrive by early evening, set up camp, dinner around the fire.

Day 3: Boat cruise and game drive. Morning boat cruise on the Victoria Nile to the base of Murchison Falls, watching hippos, crocodiles and birdlife along the banks. Afternoon game drive on the northern circuit, looking for lion, elephant, giraffe and buffalo.

Day 4: Top of the Falls and second game drive. Morning walk to the top of the falls, where the full force of the Nile funnels through a narrow rock gap. Afternoon game drive or free time at camp, group dependent.

Day 5: Return to Kampala. Long drive back, around 6 to 7 hours, arriving in the evening. We recommend not booking onward flights the same night.

Best time to go

December to February and June to September are best for camping on this route, drier ground, fewer mosquitoes and easier driving. The wetter months, March to May and October to November, can mean muddy campsites and slower travel days, worth factoring in if camping is already a step down in comfort for you.

How fit do you need to be

Moderate. There is no serious trekking, but camping means pitching in and helping with basic camp tasks, and the days on the road are long. Toilets and showers at campsites are usually shared, sometimes basic. This trip suits travellers who are comfortable roughing it a little in exchange for a lower price.
