This is a compact trip for travellers who want chimpanzee tracking without building a full safari around it, or who want an easy add-on to a Queen Elizabeth or Bwindi itinerary. Kibale has one of the highest chimp habituation success rates in East Africa, so your odds of a good sighting are strong, though never guaranteed.

Day-by-day

Day 1: Travel to Kibale and Bigodi walk. Drive to the Kibale area, timing depends on your starting point, roughly 4 to 5 hours from Kampala or Entebbe on generally good tarmac via Fort Portal. In the afternoon, a guided walk through Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run reserve bordering Kibale Forest. Expect several primate species, including red colobus and grey-cheeked mangabey, plus strong birdlife, this reserve is known among birders for its variety.

Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking. Early briefing at Kanyanchu visitor centre, around 7am to 8am, followed by a ranger-led trek into the forest. Kibale’s chimps are well habituated, so most groups find them within 1 to 3 hours, though this varies day to day. You get one hour of viewing once the group is located, watching feeding, grooming and, sometimes, territorial calling that carries through the forest. Trip ends after the trek, with a drop-off back at your onward point or lodge.

Best time to go

Kibale is trekked year round since the forest canopy keeps trails usable in most weather, though December to February and June to September remain the most comfortable months with less mud underfoot. Wetter months bring slippery trails but rarely stop tracking outright.

How fit do you need to be

Moderate. Forest paths are uneven with roots and occasional mud, and you may walk anywhere from 1 to 3 hours depending on where the chimps are that morning. It is less strenuous than gorilla trekking in Bwindi, no steep mountain terrain, but sturdy shoes and a reasonable level of fitness make it more comfortable.

FAQs

How does this compare to gorilla trekking in Bwindi? Chimp tracking in Kibale is generally shorter and less physically demanding, with flatter terrain. Chimps also move faster and more unpredictably than gorillas, sometimes swinging high in the canopy, so viewing can feel more dynamic but occasionally more distant.

Can I do this trip as a standalone from Entebbe, or does it need to link to another safari? It works as a standalone 2-day trip from Entebbe or Kampala, or as an add-on to a longer itinerary through Queen Elizabeth or Bwindi. Tell us your plans and we will slot it in efficiently.

What is the chimp habituation experience, and is it different from this? Yes, it is a separate, longer product where you join researchers observing a chimp community still being habituated to humans, typically a full day rather than one hour of viewing. It is not included in this 2-day trip but we can quote it separately if you are interested.
