This trip suits travellers based in or flying into Nairobi who want a solid taste of Kenya’s most famous reserve without a long itinerary. It runs by road, which keeps costs down compared with flying, and gives you two full days of game driving inside the Mara.

Day-by-day

Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara. Departure early morning from Nairobi, roughly 5 to 6 hours by road via Narok, on tarmac most of the way with a rougher final approach to the reserve. Arrive at your camp in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive as your first look at the plains.

Day 2: Full day in the Mara. Game drives in the morning and afternoon, with a picnic lunch back at camp or out in the bush depending on your camp’s setup. The Mara holds resident lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe and large herds of plains game year round, plus cheetah and leopard sightings that come down to luck and your guide’s tracking.

Day 3: Conservancy or river crossing points. Depending on the season, this day either explores one of the private conservancies bordering the reserve, which allow off-road driving and night drives that the main reserve does not, or focuses on areas near the Mara River, relevant if you are visiting during migration season. Your guide will advise on the best plan once you arrive, sightings and conditions shift week to week.

Day 4: Return to Nairobi. Morning game drive if timing allows, then the drive back, arriving Nairobi mid to late afternoon in time for onward flights, though we recommend not booking a same-day international departure.

Best time to go

July to October is peak season for the wildebeest migration, when large herds move through the Mara from the Serengeti and river crossings become possible to witness, though timing and location are never guaranteed, herds move on their own schedule. January and February also offer strong resident game viewing with drier conditions and thinner crowds than migration season. The Mara can be visited year round, the wetter months of April, May and November bring lush scenery but muddier roads.

How fit do you need to be

Easy. This is a seated game-drive safari with no trekking involved. It suits all ages and fitness levels, including families with older children and travellers with limited mobility.

FAQs

Will we definitely see the migration if we travel in August? No sighting is ever guaranteed, herd movements shift year to year based on rainfall. July to October is the best window statistically, but if a river crossing is your main goal, tell us and we will keep you updated on herd positions closer to your travel dates.

Is the drive from Nairobi long and uncomfortable? It runs 5 to 6 hours in a safari vehicle, with a stop partway for a break. The road is tarmac for most of the way with a bumpier unpaved stretch near the reserve. It is not a short trip, but it is a standard, well-travelled route.

Can we add the Mara to a Tanzania trip, since the ecosystem crosses the border? Yes, some travellers combine the Mara with the Serengeti, though this means an international border crossing and a different set of park fees and permits on each side. Ask us and we will put together a combined itinerary if that interests you.
