Zanzibar earned its old nickname, the Spice Island, from farms exactly like the ones on this tour, and it remains one of the better half day activities out of Stone Town for anyone who wants a slower, sensory morning rather than another beach day.
Pickup from Stone Town hotels is mid-morning, around 9am, allowing for a relaxed start after breakfast. The drive to the spice farms takes 20 to 30 minutes inland. At the farm, a guide walks you through cultivated rows and semi-wild plots growing cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper, cardamom and turmeric, alongside fruit trees such as jackfruit and starfruit. This is hands-on, you crush leaves to smell them, taste raw spices straight from the pod, and watch farm staff demonstrate traditional harvesting, including the odd but memorable trick of tying leaves into a makeshift ring, hat or tie as a bit of fun partway through. Many tours end with a simple Swahili-style lunch cooked with the same spices you have just seen growing, rice, fish or chicken in a coconut and spice sauce. Some operators combine the spice farm with a short stop at the ruins of a former sultan’s palace or a quick beach detour on the way back. You are back in Stone Town by 1pm to 1.30pm, leaving the afternoon free.
Budget USD 30 to 55 per person, covering transport, the guide, farm entry and tastings. Lunch is sometimes included and sometimes a small extra, confirm this when booking. This is one of the more affordable half day activities on Zanzibar, since the farms are close to Stone Town and the format is well established.
