UWEC is Uganda’s wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre, not a conventional zoo, and it holds animals that have been confiscated, injured or orphaned rather than captured for display. This is a solid option for a first afternoon after landing, a rest day before a longer safari, or families travelling with children who are not up for a game drive.
Pickup from Entebbe hotels is flexible, most visits run late morning or early afternoon, roughly 10am to 2pm. On the standard walkthrough, a centre guide leads you along shaded paths past enclosures holding lions, chimpanzees, rhinos, shoebills and a long list of rescued animals, explaining each one’s story and Uganda’s wider conservation work. The pace is relaxed and the paths are flat, so this is comfortable for most fitness levels. The behind-the-scenes option adds real access, entering enclosures with keepers to help prepare food, observe feeding routines up close, and for some animals such as chimpanzees or lions, get within touching distance under keeper supervision. This is not petting for photos, it is genuine keeper work, and it runs longer and needs prior arrangement. Either way, the visit wraps in three to four hours, leaving time for lunch at the centre’s lakeside restaurant, which looks out over Lake Victoria.
The standard visit runs USD 40 to 60 per person including entry and a guide. The behind-the-scenes keeper experience costs significantly more, from around USD 80 up to 120 per person depending on which animal encounter you choose, since it requires a dedicated keeper and smaller group sizes. Lunch is usually extra.
Tell us which option interests you and your travel dates, and we will confirm details with UWEC and reply within 24 hours.
