Ssese Islands Weekend, Lake Victoria

The Ssese Islands are Uganda’s answer to a beach weekend, a cluster of forested islands on Lake Victoria with sand beaches and none of mainland Uganda’s traffic or noise. This suits travellers who want a genuine break from the safari circuit, or a relaxed final stop before flying home from Entebbe.

How the day runs

Day one starts with an early ferry from Entebbe, either the passenger ferry to Kalangala on Bugala Island, which takes around three hours, or a faster private speedboat transfer at roughly 45 minutes to an hour if your budget allows it. On arrival you check into a beach lodge or eco-camp, most sitting directly on the shoreline. The afternoon is unstructured by design, a forest walk to spot the islands’ colobus and vervet monkeys, a swim (note this lake does carry a bilharzia risk, unlike Bunyonyi, so check current advice with your lodge before swimming), or simply time on the beach. Evening is a slow dinner, usually fresh fish, with limited electricity and no real nightlife, which is part of the appeal. Day two starts later, with a mid-morning option for a boda ride or short hike around the island’s back roads and villages, before an afternoon ferry or speedboat back to Entebbe, arriving by late afternoon or early evening.

Budget USD 180 to 320 per person for the full two day, one night package, covering ferry or speedboat transfers, one night’s accommodation, meals and a guided walk. The wide range reflects lodge choice, budget eco-camps sit at the lower end, while a private speedboat transfer and a nicer beach lodge push the cost up considerably.

Good to know

• Book at least a week ahead in June to August and over Christmas and New Year, when island lodges fill up fast.
• The passenger ferry runs a fixed daily schedule, missing it means a long wait or an expensive private transfer, plan your return time carefully.
• Bring cash, most islands have no functioning ATMs or reliable card payment.
• Ask your lodge about current bilharzia risk before swimming in the lake itself, and rinse off with clean water afterwards if you do.
• Skip this trip if you only have a single free day, the ferry crossing alone eats most of it, this needs the full two days to feel worthwhile.
