Sipi sits on the lower slopes of Mount Elgon, a few hours east of Jinja, and its three waterfalls make a satisfying day hike without needing mountain gear or a multi-day trek. This suits reasonably fit travellers who want scenery and a proper walk, and it works well as a stop between Jinja and Kidepo or the Kenyan border.
From Mbale, pickup is around 7.30am to 8am; from Jinja, add roughly two hours of driving each way, so an early 6am start is more realistic. At Sipi you meet a local guide, usually from a community guiding association, who leads the circuit connecting the three falls. The first and largest drop, over 90 metres, is the most photographed and reachable with a short easy walk. The second and third falls involve steeper, sometimes muddy paths through farmland and forest edge, with a short scramble behind one waterfall if conditions allow. Between falls the route crosses working coffee shambas, and most guides stop to show how Arabica coffee is grown, pulped and roasted here, often with a chance to taste a fresh cup. The full circuit takes four to five hours of actual walking, with stops for photos and the coffee demonstration. A packed lunch or a stop at a local guesthouse restaurant covers midday. You are back at your vehicle by mid-afternoon, arriving Mbale by early evening or Jinja after dark if driving straight through.
Budget USD 55 to 85 per person from Mbale, covering the guide fee, community access fees and lunch. Trips starting in Jinja cost more due to the extra transport. Private groups pay more per head than shared groups, since the guide fee is largely fixed.
