This suits travellers who want to taste real Kampala, not a sanitised version of it, and who are comfortable with crowds, noise and eating standing up. It is not for anyone wanting a quiet, formal dinner.
You meet your guide around 5pm to 5.30pm, once the day’s heat has dropped and the evening food stalls are firing up. The walk starts near the Old Taxi Park, the chaotic hub that most Kampala routes pass through, where your guide explains how the taxi system actually works while you get used to the noise and the pace. From there you move through the surrounding streets stopping at stalls for rolex, the fried egg and chapati roll that is Uganda’s answer to a wrap, then grilled meat on skewers, roasted maize, and depending on the night, mandazi or fresh fruit from a market seller. Owino market, one of the largest in East Africa, is a stop if it is still open and safe to walk through, otherwise the guide routes around the edges where stalls stay busy after dark. Throughout, the guide handles the haggling and the introductions, and explains what you are eating and why locals rate one stall over another. The tour finishes around 8.30pm to 9pm, usually near a spot where you can get a taxi or boda back to your hotel.
Expect USD 45 to 70 per person, which covers the guide, all food tastings along the route and a bottled water or soft drink. Group size affects the price band, a private couple pays more per head than a group of six. Alcohol, if you want a Nile Special beer at a bar stop, is usually extra.
Tell us your group size and preferred evening, and we will confirm a trusted Kampala food guide and reply within 24 hours.
