Jinja sits where the Nile leaves Lake Victoria, and the rapids here are some of the best commercial white water in Africa. This suits confident swimmers who want a proper adrenaline day, and separately, families or nervous paddlers who want to be on the river without the fear. Two different products, one river.
Pickup from Jinja or Kampala hotels is early, usually 7am to 7.30am, since Kampala transfers add close to two hours each way. At the river base you get a safety briefing, a life jacket fitting and a practice session in calm water. This is not optional and it matters. The full rapids trip covers around 20 to 25 kilometres and eight to nine named rapids, including grade 5 sections where the raft is likely to flip. Safety kayakers shadow every boat. A hot lunch is served on a river island around midday. The family float trip runs a gentler stretch, grade 1 to 3, with no expectation of swimming and a slower pace, good for children from about seven years old and older travellers who want the scenery without the washing machine. Both trips finish with a barbecue and a beer or soda back at base, and drop-off in Jinja is typically 5pm to 6pm.
Expect USD 140 to 180 per person for the full rapids day, including lunch, transport within Jinja, safety equipment and a photo or video package add-on if you want it. The family float trip runs slightly less. Kampala pickup adds a transport surcharge. Prices move with fuel and river operator changes, so treat this as a planning band, not a locked quote.
