Murchison can work all year. The better question is what kind of trip you want.

December to February and June to September are usually the easiest months to sell because the weather story is simple. Drier tracks, better access, easier game drives. But do not dismiss wet months. The park is greener, birding improves, and there is more room to breathe at lodges.
The trade-off is road condition and timing. Wet-season safaris need more patience. They also need a driver-guide who does not gamble with mud, darkness, or ferry timing.
If you are combining Murchison with gorilla trekking, let the gorilla permits drive the calendar first. Murchison is more flexible than Bwindi permit supply.

Most international travellers start from Entebbe. You can sleep near the airport on arrival, then leave early the next morning. If you are already in Kampala, leave early and avoid turning the first day into a late arrival.
UWA describes Murchison as 305 km / 190 miles north of Kampala, with 4 to 5 hours to the southern entrance gate, then another hour or two to many lodges. Uganda Tourism Board gives a similar road pattern and notes that Fort Portal is about 280 km away and at least 6 hours by road.
Add Ziwa and lunch and the day becomes a full transfer day. That is fine if planned honestly. It is not fine if sold as "just a few hours".
Flights can save your body, especially on short trips or with older guests. UWA notes that scheduled or chartered aircraft can operate from Entebbe or Kajjansi, with Pakuba Airfield the most convenient point for the main Paraa lodge cluster. Chobe and Bugungu are also options.
Flying is not always the better choice. You lose the Ziwa road stop unless you add it elsewhere, and luggage limits can be tighter. But for a 3 or 4-day luxury trip, a flight can protect the feel of the safari.
Murchison pairs well with a 10-day Uganda circuit:
The weak point is distance. Do not let an itinerary hide the long transfer between Kibale and Murchison. It is possible, and we run it, but it is a real travel day.

Leave early. Stop at Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch if rhino tracking is included. Ziwa’s official guidance says tracking takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on rhino location and requires closed shoes, drinking water, long trousers, insect repellent, and a camera.
After Ziwa, continue towards Masindi and the park. Depending on lodge location and gate choice, you may arrive late afternoon. This is not the day for an ambitious game drive unless your routing makes it easy.
Best use of the evening: check in, eat well, confirm the next day’s timings, and sleep.
Start with the falls or structure the day around the boat schedule, depending on where you slept. If you hike from the bottom up, take water and shoes that can handle spray and uneven ground.
The boat cruise is the emotional centre of the trip for many guests. You sit lower than the game-drive vehicle, close to the waterline, watching the river work. This is where Murchison slows down.
Do not overpack the day. A lodge lunch and a slower afternoon are better than rushing from one checkbox to another.
This is the day to be out before sunrise. Your driver-guide should know the tracks, radio rhythm, ferry or bridge logistics, and how to read fresh information without turning the drive into a convoy chase.
After lunch, choose one:
If someone promises Big Five in the park, correct them. Rhinos are at Ziwa, not roaming Murchison. The better claim is "Big Five style routing with Ziwa".
Leave without drama. If your international flight is late evening, it may be possible to connect, but we prefer not to build a tight departure day after a long road transfer. Add a final Entebbe night if your flight timing is awkward.
This is not wasted time. A clean exit is part of a well-built safari.

This tier works for travellers who care more about the park than the room. Expect simpler rooms, less polished service, and more practical meal setups. It is the right tier for budget-aware families, returning diaspora travellers travelling with relatives, and groups who want the money in activities rather than linen.
Watch the location. A cheaper lodge that adds long daily transfers can ruin the saving.
This is the sweet spot for most private safaris. You want good food, reliable rooms, a strong location, and a place where evenings feel like safari rather than a roadside stop.

Luxury in Murchison is about setting, guiding rhythm, food, privacy, and not feeling processed. It is not just a room upgrade. If you are flying into Pakuba, travelling for a honeymoon, or adding Murchison after gorillas, this tier can make sense.
The honest warning: luxury lodges sell out in good months. If you want June to September or December to February, plan early.

Travel advice can change faster than printed itineraries. As of 1 July 2026, the UK FCDO page for Uganda was still current and updated that same day with health-risk information. The US State Department issued a Level 4 "Do not travel" Uganda advisory on 4 June 2026, citing crime, health, terrorism, and unrest.
