Why this is our best-selling Uganda trip

A gorilla trek done well takes one focused trip — not bolted onto a longer safari as an afterthought. This 3-day fly-in is the cleanest way to do it: arrive Entebbe one evening, fly to Kihihi the next morning, trek the morning after, fly back the same afternoon. No marathon road days. One memory, fully delivered.

It is also the trip that breaks first if anything in the supply chain isn’t tight — UWA permit, lodge availability, the bush flight, the driver-guide at the airstrip. We have done it hundreds of times. Permits paid in full at booking (UWA rule since 1 March 2026).

Day-by-day

Day 1 — Entebbe → Bwindi (fly)

  • Morning: Arrive Entebbe International (or transfer from your Kampala hotel).
  • 11:30: AeroLink scheduled flight Entebbe ↔ Kihihi (or Kisoro, depending on lodge — we pick).
  • 13:30: Lunch on landing, then a short transfer (45–90 min by 4×4) to your Bwindi lodge.
  • Afternoon: Settle in. Optional Batwa cultural visit or a forest-edge walk with the lodge guide.
  • Evening: Briefing for tomorrow’s trek over dinner.

Stay: Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp (luxury) / Mahogany Springs (premium) / Buhoma Lodge (comfortable) — selected to match your sector and preference.

Day 2 — Gorilla trek

  • 05:30: Hot breakfast at the lodge.
  • 07:00: Drive or walk to the sector ranger station for the briefing.
  • 08:00: Trek begins — your group of 8, a lead ranger, two armed guards, trackers ahead by radio. 1–6 hours on the trail; on average 2–4. The one hour with the gorillas is the only fixed point in the day.
  • Lunch: Boxed on the trail or back at the lodge.
  • Afternoon: Hot shower. A nap. A community walk (Batwa, weaving cooperative). The trekking certificate ceremony.
  • Evening: Dinner. Replay the day.

Day 3 — Bwindi → Entebbe (fly)

  • Morning: Slow breakfast. Walk to a tea plantation viewpoint, or a coffee-and-craft tour.
  • 12:30: Transfer to the airstrip.
  • 14:00: Flight back to Entebbe. International departures from 19:00 onwards comfortable.

  • Time-poor business travellers extending an East Africa visit.

Not the right trip for:

  • Kids under 15 (UWA rule, no exceptions).
  • Anyone unable to walk slowly uphill for 3+ hours (consider the sedan-chair option; speak to us).

FAQ

Why so much for one hour with gorillas? The permit alone is USD 800 per person (the protected funding line behind one of the world’s most fragile species). The flight is USD 480 each way. The lodges that work this corridor are remote and priced accordingly. You are paying for a single, irreversible day — and our job is to make sure it happens.

Can I skip the bush flight to save money? Yes — drive-in saves about USD 600/person. It costs you two days. We will do this trip drive-in for guests on tighter budgets, but for 3 days end-to-end the flight makes the trip; on 7+ days drive-in is reasonable.

What if I’m denied trekking on the day? UWA reserves the right to deny trekking on health grounds (a cold counts) to protect the gorillas. The permit is non-refundable if you are denied. Your travel insurance must include trip-interruption cover for this scenario — we will flag the requirement.

Can two of us share one permit? No. One permit, one person. If only one of you is trekking, the other can stay at the lodge or join the Batwa cultural day.

When do I have to pay? A 30% deposit secures the trip and pays the permit in full to UWA at that moment. Balance is due 60 days before travel.
