Image: lake-at-dusk-entebbe (chat-upload-001) — soft secondary use; the page is more about families and conservation than wildlife portraits. Alt: Lake Victoria at dusk near Entebbe, Uganda — Hello East Africa
H1: Uganda Wildlife Education Centre — Half-Day from Entebbe Sub: "Uganda’s only zoological park and conservation centre, on the lakeshore in Entebbe. Honest, family-friendly, and 15 minutes from the airport."

UWEC is not a safari. It is the country’s only zoological park and primate conservation centre, run as a Uganda Wildlife Authority partner. The animals you see — lions, leopards, white rhinos, chimps, monkeys, shoebills, and others — live in large enclosures and rescue compounds.

We include UWEC because:
What it is not: a substitute for Bwindi, Murchison, or Queen Elizabeth. For wild Uganda, see our Bwindi 3-Day Gorilla Safari → or Uganda 10-Day Classic →.

08:30 (morning start) or 13:30 (afternoon start): Pick-up from your Entebbe hotel. 09:00 / 14:00: Arrival at UWEC’s main entrance (the painted twin-giraffe sculpture; you’ll recognise it). Self-paced walk with our guide along the main loop:
Lunch break at the on-site café (own tab; halal/veg available). End: Drop-off at your Entebbe hotel by 13:00 (morning) or 18:00 (afternoon).

Is UWEC a zoo or a safari? A zoological park and rescue centre, not a safari. We include it because it is genuinely one of the best Entebbe-area family activities and because the animals are housed in larger, more naturalistic compounds than most international zoos. If you want to see wild Uganda, the gorilla, chimp, and game-drive itineraries are what you book.
Is the white tiger Ugandan? No. The white tiger at UWEC is part of an international exchange and not a Uganda wildlife species. Our trip team does not promote it as a "Uganda" experience. We mention it only because guests sometimes ask.
Is it kid-friendly? Yes — UWEC is the most kid-friendly Uganda wildlife experience available. Strollers welcome.
How does this compare to a real Murchison or Queen Elizabeth safari? A real safari is a multi-day private 4×4 in a national park, with wild animals at variable distances. UWEC is a 4-hour walking visit to a zoological park with captive animals at close, predictable range. Both have their place. The 4-hour UWEC visit is not a substitute for a 4-day safari.
Is it ethical? UWEC is a recognised conservation partner of the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Its rescue, rehabilitation, and education work is real. Standards are good by international zoo benchmarks (USAZA-affiliated). Your entry fees fund Uganda’s wild-conservation programmes.
