H1: Mabamba Shoebill Half-Day from Entebbe Sub: "One of the most reliable shoebill sightings on the planet, 90 minutes from the airport. A small boat, a quiet wetland, and a prehistoric bird that does not move."
—
The shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) is one of the world’s most sought-after birds — a four-foot, slate-grey, slow-blinking dinosaur. Mabamba Bay on Lake Victoria’s western shore is one of three places on Earth where sightings are near-guaranteed.

06:00 — Pick-up from your Entebbe hotel (or Kampala — add USD 30/person for the longer drive). 07:00 — Arrival at Mabamba landing. A small wooden boat with paddle (engine off in the marsh — shoebills are spooked by motors). 07:15 — Into the papyrus channels. Quiet. The boatmen track the bird based on yesterday’s location and radio updates. ~08:00 — First sighting (typical). You’ll have 15–30 minutes with the bird at distance, sometimes much closer. 09:00 — Wider loop of the wetland — secondary birds, jacanas, kingfishers. 09:30 — Off the water. Tea and bites at the landing. 10:30 — Back in Entebbe.

This is the ideal first morning of a Uganda safari — short, magical, gets you on the road by lunchtime. Pair with Bwindi 3-Day Gorilla Safari → to start the trip in style.

How likely am I to actually see a shoebill? In our records over the last three years, > 96% of mornings produced a sighting. Birds in the wild are never guaranteed, but Mabamba is as close as East Africa gets.
Why so early? Shoebills are active at dawn and dusk; they tend to retreat into deep papyrus when the sun gets high. We need you on the water by 07:15.
Is it safe for kids? Yes from age 6. The boat is stable, the trip is calm.
